Scriptures: Scripture readings are included in the liturgy of every worship service at Liberation UCC. These help us focus our attention on various aspect of spiritual growth an serve as a theme for the day.
Liberation UCC understand the Bible (coming from the Greek word biblos meaning “library”) to be a wide collection of myths, poems, short stories, theological essays and letters, gospels, historical chronicles and ancient legal documents created over thousands of years and including many diverse theological perspectives. We interpret the meaning and value of these various pieces in the Bible according to the one law of Christ: “Love one another as I have loved you.”
We hold these writings to be “inspired” in the same sense that we understand spiritual inspiration today: the revealing, creative interaction between our tradition of faith and the specific historical situation in which the faithful live. So, for example, the ancient Isaiah was a prophet in his time much like Rev Martin Luther King, Jr was in ours. Understanding ancient traditions informs us about our own spiritual quest today.
We stand within the UCC tradition, first articulated in 1620 by John Robinson, the pastor of the Pilgrims: “There is ever yet more light and truth to break forth from God’s Holy Word.”
