Communion: The communion or Eucharist is the celebration of our sense of community with each other and the Spirit in our midst. The older word, Eucharist, is the Greek word for “thanksgiving,” and reflects our gratitude and joy in sharing our spiritual journeys together. Communion, from the Latin words “with” and “unity,” points to the symbolic meaning of sharing a meal together as a spiritual community.
Through this symbolic act we participate in sharing our dream of all being one in the Spirit.
Sharing food together as a community ritual is common to all human cultures Our meal is also deeply rooted in the Passover Feast of the Jewish tradition, in which families gather to remember their people’s liberation from slavery and their commitment of solidarity with all oppressed people. It was during a Passover meal that Jesus asked his friends to remember him, the night before he was executed by the authorities for treason because he taught the coming of a new age of liberation.
